PDR set up Centre for Patient Specific Medical Product Design

The Centre for Patient Specific Medical Product Design has been established at PDR. The Centre will assist the broad spectrum of Welsh medical product development companies and NHS specialties to tackle the growing demand for products that are personalised to meet patient needs.

The new centre will build upon the success of the Medical Applications Group and the CARTIS collaboration. Two new roles will be created by the centre: a technology translator and research technician.

The Centre will provide access to Welsh industry on cutting edge principles at a number of levels:

1. Make available to Welsh-based companies the latest intellectual and technical resources in patient-specific design.
2. Provide such access to these resources in a manner that is responsive to the needs of individual company clients, NHS specialties and other partners.
3. Develop and maintain an on-going research programme in the techniques of patient-specific design, making the outcomes of such research available to clients in a pro-active and timely manner.

CARTIS members assist in facial prosthetics workshop

Peter Evans and Dominic Eggbeer taught on the recent digital design in facial prosthetics workshop, hosted by iRSM in Edmonton, Canada. The workshop introduced an array of technologies that aid in the planning, design and fabrication of prosthetic devices.

The workshop brought together the expertise of staff at iRSM, Dr. Pierre Boulanger (Professor at the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta), Ms. Rosemary Seelaus (Senior Anaplastologist at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago), Peter Evans (Senior Chief Maxillofacial Prosthetist at Morriston Hospital, Swansea) and Dominic Eggbeer (Research Officer at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff).

PDR’s Medical Applications Group welcomes a new team member

Steffan Daniel recently joined PDR’s Medical Applications Group. Steffan is undertaking PhD research into novel extra-oral prosthesis retention mechanism design. His research continues the CARTIS commitment to evaluate and improve maxillofacial prosthetics techniques using computer-based technologies. State of the art in extra-oral, facial prosthesis retention is currently based on hand crafted mechanisms attached to osseointegrated implants. There are numerous limitations with current methods, which digital technologies have the potential to overcome. Steffan’s research will lead to a more efficient digital workflow in facial prosthesis design.

International Conference on Advanced Digital Technologies in Head & Neck Reconstruction 2011

The 4th International Conference on Advanced Digital Technologies in Head & Neck Reconstruction will be held in Freiburg, Germany, 5th-8th May, 2011. The conference has previously been hosted in Edmonton and Banff, Canada and Cardiff, Wales. The conference brings together expertise in areas of: Image Acquisition Rapid Prototyping/Additive Manufacturing Computerised Planning Systems Colour Measurement and Formulation Navigation Systems Robotic Systems Assessment of Function Virtual Reality Patient Data Management Endoscopic Surgery The 2008 conference in Cardiff set a theme of identifying and exploring the future role of innovative digital technologies in reconstruction of the head and neck and played host to cutting edge speakers from around the world.

Further details on the 2008 conference can be found at http://www.res-inc.com/at_2008/

Maxillofacial Prosthetics Course

CARTIS will be contributing to a course on Digital Design in Facial Prosthetics to be held at iRSM, Edmonton, Canada in conjunction with University of Illinois at Chicago and Morriston Hospital, 7th – 9th April 2010. Peter Evans will be lecturing and Dominic Eggbeer will also contribute to the course and help establish research projects. The course will provide tuition on digital technologies for planning, design and fabrication of prosthetic devices. It will include hands on experience with patient specific data to practice design fundamentals for manufacture of wax prototype parts and substructure components. A few places are still avilable.

Additive manufacturing used to fabricate a patient-specific implant

The CARTIS group collaborated with Centre for Rapid Prototyping & Manufacture (CRPM) at the Central University of Technology, South Africa, in the design and production of a patient-specific, orbital zygomatic implant. The implant was designed by the maxillofacial team at Morriston Hospital and manufactured in Titanium using Direct Metal Laser Sintering at CRPM. The case has been presented at the 26th IMPT meeting in Belfast, 2009 and will also be presented at the upcoming Time Compression Technologies Live 2010 conference. CARTIS are also working with CRPM on further research projects.

CARTIS launch new Patient Information

CARTIS has recently launched new, web-based patient information that describes the treatment ofprosthetic retention using osseointegrated implants.  CARTIS embarked on the project to utilise our research and technical skills to develop new patient information hosted here on this website free for all patients and their families.

The project was funded by the UWIC Third Mission Fund and was undertaken by CARTIS using the lastest computer aided design software.

CARTIS research contributes to new book

A new book on the application of advanced technologies in medicine has recently been published. The book Medical modelling: The application of advanced design and development techniques in medicine, was written by Dr. Richard Bibb, Head of Medical Applications at the National Centre for Product Design & Development Research and a member of the CARTIS team.

The research carried out by CARTIS provided much of the material for the book and many of the case studies that feature in the book are taken from CARTIS projects that have addressed the application of advanced design technologies in surgery and prosthetic reconstruction.

The book is available from Woodhead Publishing Ltd. and details can be found here.

South Wales teacher’s epic bike ride completed!

A South Wales primary school teacher has successfully completed a mammoth 1,000 miles cycle ride to Geneva in aid of the Swansea NHS Trust hospital which helped him recover from serious head and facial injuries sustained in a French skiing accident in 2003.  Gavin Rees completed the cycleGENEVA challenge with his friend Duncan Edwards, who was also injured in the same accident.

They set off from Milford Haven in West Wales and cycled to Alpe D'Huez in France, via Geneva, to celebrate Gavin’s recovery and in thanks for the support and ongoing care he has received from Morriston Hospital’s Maxillofacial Unit.

CARTIS would like to congratulate Gavin and Duncan on this incredible achievement and thank them for their fund raising efforts.

Gavin has raised a great deal of money but would like to raise more.  Please visit Gavin’s web site and support his fund raising efforts (www.cycleGENEVA.co.uk).

New partnership builds on head and neck reconstructive surgery advancements

A new partnership which aims to make Wales a world-leader in the research, development and application of advanced medical technology will be launched on February 9th 2006.

The Centre for Applied Reconstructive Technologies in Surgery (CARTIS) has been jointly established by Swansea NHS Trust’s Maxillofacial Unit at Morriston Hospital and the National Centre for Product Design and Development Research (PDR) at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). The Centre, which is unique in Wales, was launched at a dinner at UWIC’s Celtic Suite Restaurant, Colchester Avenue.

The launch of the new centre combines the strengths of Morriston Hospital and UWIC in a formal partnership. It brings together the existing facilities and expertise of both Morriston’s Maxillofacial Unit and UWIC’s PDR for the benefit of patients with diseases including cancer, face and jaw deformity, and injuries, as well as close collaboration with neurosurgeons.

The full UWIC press release of this story is available here.

The Centre is funded through the Welsh Assembly Government, Acedemic Expertise for Business programme.  A total of £390,000 will establish the Centre, which will become self sustaining after three years.
